Madrid highlights
Nick Kyrgios defeated Stan Wawrinka in straight sets with
Donna Vekic looking on. With the
exception of one heated exchange with the umpire over a line call, Kyrgios
acted like an adult! If this high strung
player can get control of his emotions and substitute intelligent, focused play
for trick shots, arguments with fans, audible obscenities and other antics, he
could end up winning majors and being ranked in the world’s top 5.
Speaking of emotions, Fabio Fognini lost a point for ball
abuse and shortly thereafter lost his 3-set match with Kei Nishikori. We all get frustrated on the court at times,
but top pros should stop and think about the cost of such actions, both in
prize money and endorsements that go with higher rankings, before acting
up.
Juan Martin Del Potro looked good in beating Dominic Thiem,
who is a very tough out these days. Del
Potro served well on important points, but most notably, hit is backhand
firmly, with both hands on the racquet.
It would be great to see him back at full strength!
Milos Raonic continued to quietly move through the
draw. He put on an awesome display of
serving against Alexandr Dogopolov. One
of his second serves came in at 137 mph(!), but it was the variety of spins and
locations on the serve that was most impressive.
